BOWERS GIFFORD
The village of Buers was listed in the Domesday Book survey of 1086. Today it is known as Bowers Gifford.
The area takes part of its name from The Gifford family who were once important residents.

The village is situated between Pitsea & Benfleet and is easily accessed along London Road.

At the bottom of the hill, at the end of Church Road, having gone past The Old Rectory and Bowers Hall, is the Church of St. Margaret’s. The church is Grade II listed and was first built in the 1300’s by Sir John Giffard, with additions being added 300 years later and incorporated in to the renovations in 1910.

In the churchyard is the large family grave of Harold George Howard, the man responsible for the mock-Tudor look in Pitsea’s town centre, and the War Memorial in Howard’s Park.
