NORTH BENFLEET

The village of North Benfleet shares a postcode with Wickford and is bordered by Bowers Gifford to the south, Nevendon to the north, Pitsea to the west and South Benfleet to the (South) East.

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles describes the Viking fleet being destroyed at ‘Beamfleote’ by the Britons. This name appears to mean ‘beam with timbers’ and may refer to a bridge near Benfleet Creek.

‘Benflet’, then part of the Barstable Hundred, (probably including both North and South Benfleet) was listed in the 1086 Domesday Book survey as being a large town of 83 households.

North Benfleet Hall once stood at the top of North Benfleet Hall Road1, near the more modern housing that is overlooked by All Saints Church.

The Hall was built in the Tudor period and disappeared sometime in the 1930's or 40's.  There are rumours of it having secret rooms and tunnels leading to the church.

Parts of All Saints Church date to the 1300’s, if not earlier, but there may be Norman remains in the current building.  The church was rebuilt in the 1600’s and restored 200 years later.  The tower was built in 1903 but contains the timber frame of the previous tower.
